We would rather you hear this from us before you order than after.
If you are thinking about engraving a YETI, Stanley, or Owala, it is fair to ask what happens to the maker's warranty. It is one of the most searched questions about custom drinkware, and a lot of shops dodge it.
Here is the straight version. The big brands generally do not cover products that have been customized by someone other than them. That includes engraving from any outside shop, ours included. Below is what each brand says, what engraving actually touches, and how to think about the trade-off.
Quick answer
Generally, yes. YETI says it cannot warranty products altered by third parties. Stanley's warranty excludes post-purchase modifications and names engraving as an example. Owala's warranty terms also exclude third-party modifications. Engraving only removes outer coating, so it does not reach the insulation, but the maker decides coverage, not the engraver.
What each brand says
| Brand | What the maker says (summary) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| YETI | Its own customization keeps the five-year warranty intact. It cannot warranty products altered by third parties. | YETI Rambler customization FAQ |
| Stanley | Warranty does not cover defects or damage from post-purchase modifications, for example engraving. | Stanley 1913 product warranty page |
| Owala | Warranty excludes third-party modifications and repairs or modifications by anyone other than Owala. | Owala warranty terms |
| Polar Camel | Check the maker's current terms for your model. | Maker documentation |
We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. It is a plain summary of what the brands publish so you can decide with the facts in front of you.
What engraving actually touches
It helps to know what the laser does and does not reach.
- It does: remove the outer powder coat inside your design, leaving bare stainless steel showing.
- It does not: touch the inner wall, the vacuum space between the walls, the lid, the gasket, or the straw.
Insulation comes from the vacuum between two steel walls. Done correctly, engraving stays on the surface of the outer wall. That is why a well-engraved tumbler keeps ice just like an unengraved one.
Why it still matters
Even though engraving is a surface mark, the brands write their warranties broadly. A maker can decline a claim on a modified product without proving the modification caused the problem. That is their right, and it is why we tell you up front.
How big is the real-world risk?
Think about what warranties usually cover on drinkware: a manufacturing defect like a failed vacuum seal that lets a cup sweat or lose temperature. That is uncommon on these brands, and they tend to show up early in a product's life.
Things that are usually not covered anyway, engraved or not, include dents from drops, scratches, chipped coating from normal use, and lost lids. So for most people the practical question is narrow: would you rather have a personalized piece, or keep the option of a maker warranty claim for a rare defect?
| Situation | Typical outcome |
|---|---|
| Dented from a drop | Usually not covered by makers, engraved or not |
| Coating chipped from normal use | Usually not covered, engraved or not |
| Lid lost or broken | Often sold as a replacement part |
| Vacuum seal fails (cup sweats, loses temperature) | The main case where a maker warranty would matter |
| Error in the engraving itself | Contact the engraver. With us, email photos within 7 days of delivery. |
Your options
1. Buy customized from the maker
YETI and some other brands offer their own customization, which keeps their warranty. Design options, turnaround, and local support vary.
2. Have a local shop engrave it
You get more design freedom, real people who answer email, proofs before anything is engraved, and fast turnaround. The trade-off is the maker warranty described above.
3. Engrave something without a big-brand warranty question
Our Polar Camel drinkware is a great-value option built for engraving, and it is a popular pick for corporate and bulk orders.
How we handle it
Here is what you can count on from us:
- We email a proof before we engrave anything, and we adjust it until you approve it.
- Orders under 12 pieces ship 1 to 3 business days after proof approval. 12 or more ship in 5 to 7 business days.
- If we make an error, email photos within 7 days of delivery and we will remake it. Remakes are for our errors, so photos help us sort it out fast.
- Because each piece is made for you, all sales are final. Check your proof carefully.
You can read the full process on how it works and answers to common questions on our FAQ.
Questions to ask any engraver before you order
Whoever you choose, a few questions tell you a lot about how your piece will turn out:
- Will I see a proof first? You should always get a digital proof to approve before anything is engraved.
- What happens if you make a mistake? Ask how errors are handled and how quickly you need to report them.
- How long is production? Get production time and shipping time separately so you can plan for a date.
- Can you engrave my logo? Vector files like SVG, AI, EPS, or a vector PDF give the cleanest result.
- Is a rush available? If you have a deadline, ask before you order, not after.
We answer every one of those on our FAQ. For a rush, our rush add-on moves your order to the front of the production queue. It is non-refundable.
What about a tumbler you already own?
We also engrave tumblers you already have through bring-your-own engraving. The same warranty point applies: once it is engraved, the maker may not cover it. If your tumbler already has dents or chips, send photos first so we can tell you how it will look.
The bottom line
Engraving from any outside shop will likely end the maker's warranty on YETI, Stanley, and Owala. Engraving does not touch the insulation, and most of what goes wrong with drinkware is not covered anyway. If a personalized piece matters more to you than a rare defect claim, engrave it and enjoy it. If the warranty matters most, buy customized from the maker or choose a brand where that is not a concern.
Frequently asked questions
Does engraving void the YETI warranty?
YETI says its own customization keeps the five-year warranty intact, but it cannot warranty products altered by third parties. Engraving by an outside shop generally ends YETI coverage.
Does engraving void the Stanley warranty?
Stanley's warranty excludes defects or damage from post-purchase modifications and lists engraving as an example.
Does engraving void the Owala warranty?
Owala's warranty terms exclude third-party modifications and repairs or modifications by anyone other than Owala.
Does laser engraving damage the insulation?
Not when done correctly. The laser removes only the outer coating. It does not reach the vacuum space between the walls that provides insulation.
What if there is a mistake in my engraving?
Email photos within 7 days of delivery. If the error is ours, we remake it. We also send a proof before we engrave so you can catch spelling and layout issues first.
Can I return an engraved tumbler?
Personalized items are made just for you, so all sales are final. Remakes are available for our errors within 7 days with photos.
