Two great tumblers. One gift. Here is how to choose.
Stanley and YETI are the two names most people ask for by name, and both are excellent tumblers. Independent reviewers have tested them side by side for years and keep landing on the same conclusion: they are close, and the right pick depends on how you drink.
When you add engraving, a few more things matter: the shape of the surface, where the handle sits, and how the piece will be used and washed. We engrave both in Aubrey, so here is the plain comparison we give customers who are stuck between them.
Quick answer
Both engrave cleanly: the laser removes the powder coat and reveals bright stainless steel on each. Choose a Stanley Quencher for a big handled cup with a straw that fits a cup holder. Choose a YETI Rambler for a sturdy, classic tumbler and a wide lineup from lowballs to bottles. For hot coffee on the go, a YETI Rambler Tumbler with its slider lid is the easier pick.
Side by side: the quick comparison
| Feature | Stanley | YETI |
|---|---|---|
| Signature piece | Quencher H2.0 FlowState with handle and straw | Rambler Tumbler and Travel Straw Mug |
| Engraving result | Bright stainless reveal through the powder coat | Bright stainless reveal through the powder coat |
| Sizes we engrave | 20 to 40 oz | 10 to 40 oz |
| Handle | Large, comfortable handle on the Quencher line | Handle on Travel Straw Mugs; classic Rambler Tumblers have none |
| Cup holder fit | Tapered base on the Quencher | Most Ramblers fit; larger mugs taper |
| Insulation | Very close; some tests give Stanley a slight edge on hot drinks | Very close; nearly identical on cold drinks |
| Feel | Lighter for its size | Heavier, very rugged |
| Best for | All-day water, big sippers, color lovers | Coffee drinkers, outdoor use, classic look |
Insulation: closer than the internet says
Lab and editorial tests from outlets like Food and Wine and Good Housekeeping have found the two very close on temperature. In one widely shared test, the Stanley Quencher kept hot coffee a few degrees warmer than the YETI, while the two were nearly identical with ice water over 24 hours.
In daily life, that difference is hard to notice. Both keep ice through a North Texas summer afternoon. Both keep coffee warm through a morning commute. Do not let insulation decide this one.
Does engraving affect insulation?
No, when it is done correctly. The laser works on the outer coating only. It does not reach the vacuum space between the two steel walls that does the insulating.
Engraving space and placement
This is where the two actually differ for personalization.
Stanley Quencher
The 40 oz Quencher H2.0 and 30 oz Quencher have a big handle on one side. That leaves a wide, clear face opposite the handle for a name, monogram, or logo, plus room on the sides. The body tapers toward the base, so tall designs work best in the upper half.
YETI Rambler
The Rambler 20 oz Tumbler has smooth walls with no handle, so a design can go on the front, the back, or both. The Travel Straw Mugs have a handle like the Quencher. Smaller pieces like the 10 oz Lowball and Colster have less room, so short text and simple marks look best.
Design tip
Short and bold beats long and tiny. A first name, a monogram, or a clean logo reads from across the room. Long quotes on a small surface get hard to read.

Lids, straws, and leaks
Lids are the biggest daily difference.
- Stanley Quencher uses a rotating FlowState lid with a straw opening, a drink opening, and a full-cover position. It resists splashes but is not leakproof when tipped over in a bag. The ProTour and IceFlow lines add flip-straw lids for better carrying.
- YETI Rambler Tumblers use the MagSlider lid, which is great for coffee. Travel Straw Mugs use a straw lid. Neither is meant to be tossed in a bag on its side.
If the person carries a bottle in a backpack, look at bottle-style picks like the Stanley AeroLight Transit Bottle, the YETI Rambler Bottle with Chug Cap, or an Owala FreeSip.
How color affects the engraving
Because the engraving is bare stainless steel, the color of the coating decides how much it pops. This is true for both brands.
| Coating color | How the engraving looks |
|---|---|
| Black, navy, deep green | Highest contrast. Crisp and easy to read from a distance. |
| Bold brights (red, cobalt, orange) | Strong contrast with a fun look. |
| Pastels and soft neutrals | Softer, more subtle contrast. Elegant for monograms. |
| White and very light colors | Lowest contrast. Best with bold lettering. |
Stanley tends to release lots of seasonal and pastel shades. YETI leans toward deep, outdoor colors. If maximum contrast matters, pick a darker color from either brand.
Which one fits the person you are buying for?
| If they... | Pick |
|---|---|
| Drink water all day at a desk | Stanley Quencher 40 oz |
| Want hot coffee on the drive | YETI Rambler 20 oz Tumbler |
| Love color and trends | Stanley |
| Work outside or hunt and fish | YETI |
| Need something for a can or a cocktail | YETI Colster or Lowball |
| Want a straw but a sturdier feel | YETI Travel Straw Mug |
| Carry a bag everywhere | A bottle: Stanley AeroLight, YETI Chug, or Owala FreeSip |
Warranty and care after engraving
Both brands have policies on aftermarket customization. YETI says it cannot warranty products altered by third parties, and Stanley's warranty excludes post-purchase modifications such as engraving. That is true of any shop engraving, not just ours. We cover the details in does engraving void your warranty.
Care is the same for both: warm water, mild soap, soft sponge. See our care instructions.
The bottom line
You cannot really get this wrong. If the person sips water all day and loves a handle, go Stanley. If they want a rugged classic or drink hot coffee on the go, go YETI. Either way, the engraving will look just as sharp, because on both the laser reveals the same bright steel.

Frequently asked questions
Is Stanley or YETI better for engraving?
Both engrave equally well. On each, the laser removes the powder coat and reveals bright stainless steel. Choose based on how the person drinks: a handled Quencher for all-day water, a YETI Rambler for coffee and rugged use.
Does Stanley or YETI keep drinks colder?
They are very close. Independent tests have found nearly identical cold retention over 24 hours, with Stanley a few degrees ahead on hot drinks in some tests.
Can you engrave both sides of a tumbler?
Yes on most models. Tumblers without a handle, like the YETI Rambler 20 oz, have the most room. Handled cups usually take a design on the front and sides.
Which is better for hot coffee?
A YETI Rambler Tumbler with its MagSlider lid is a natural coffee cup. Straw tumblers are built for cold drinks.
Does engraving void the warranty on Stanley or YETI?
Both makers limit warranty coverage for aftermarket customization. YETI says it cannot warranty products altered by third parties, and Stanley excludes post-purchase modifications such as engraving.
How long does an engraved tumbler take?
Orders under 12 pieces ship 1 to 3 business days after you approve your proof. Orders of 12 or more ship in 5 to 7 business days.
